Cmd+X Not Working on Mac? Why Cut Fails in Finder, Excel, Word, Chrome and Notes

Close-up of the Command key on a laptop keyboard

Quick answer: If ⌘X does nothing on your Mac, the cause depends on where you press it. In Finder there is no cut for files by design. On web pages and PDFs the text is read-only, so you can copy but not cut. In Excel or Word the document may be protected. Anywhere else, check for a remapped shortcut and test in TextEdit.

The Finder case is covered in depth in Cmd+X Not Working in Finder? Here’s Why (and the Fix). This page covers the others.

Why ⌘X fails, by app

Finder (file list)Finder has no Cut for files⌘C then Option+⌘V
Web pages, PDFs, read-only textText cannot be edited, so it cannot be cutCopy with ⌘C instead
ExcelProtected sheet or locked cellsUnprotect the sheet or unlock the cells
Word and PagesDocument is locked or in a read-only modeAllow editing, or save a copy

Test it in TextEdit

Open TextEdit, type a word, select it and press ⌘X. If it cuts there, your keyboard and macOS are fine and the problem is the specific app. If it does not, check the keyboard and shortcuts below.

Check for a changed shortcut

  1. Open System Settings ▸ Keyboard ▸ Keyboard Shortcuts ▸ App Shortcuts.

  2. Look for a shortcut assigned to Cut in the affected app.

  3. Remove or change it, then restart the app.

Keyboard utilities that remap keys can also intercept ⌘X. Quit them and test again.

Using a Windows keyboard

On a Windows keyboard connected to a Mac, Ctrl+X is Control+X, not Cut. Use the key with the Windows logo, which acts as Command, so Windows key plus X cuts. See the Windows keyboard on Mac map.

If it is files in Finder

Use ⌘C then Option+⌘V, or add a real cut with FileCutPaste. Details: How to Cut and Paste a File on a MacBook?.
